Nuoro & Ortobene |

Nuoro has been linked with Mount Ortobene since its origins, its inhabitants are believed to have derived from a community that originally lived on this mountain. Evidence of ancient human civilizations can be found in the nuragic constructions (3000 B.C.) and in the Domus de Janas (Houses of fairies) situated at the foot of the mountain.
Nuoro firstly developed as an Episcopal centre and secondly as an administrative one. The street of Corso Garibaldi is in the heart of the town and with the oldest buildings that surround it forms the old town. Satta square (designed and built by the artist Costantino Nivola) is of particular beauty. Around this historical centre are some more recent buildings from the Fascist period. The buildings that can be found in the suburbs of Nuoro are of a more modern construction, some of which have been built on the ruins of older buildings.
It is certainly interesting for visitors to try some of the local cuisine, including the various roasted and boiled meats, the Carasau bread, homemade pastas, sweets and various wines of the region such as: Cannonau, Vernaccia, Vermentino etc.

The most noteworthy churches are: the Cathedral, Le Grazie new, Le Grazie old, Il Rosario, La Solitudine, San Carlo, San Salvatore, Santa Croce, the church in Valverde and the little church on Mount Ortobene.
There is a magnificent view to be enjoyed from Sant’Onofrio. The hill once had a statue dedicated to the poet Sebastiano Satta, and you can also view an attractive castle. Near the Sant’Onofrio hill is the Ethnographic Museum, other museums are the M.A.N. (an art museum for the province of Nuoro), the Speleoarcheologico, and the Deleddiano. Nearby Nuoro is the small village of Lollove with a small population of people. The inhabitants and those who once lived there regularly organize cultural activities and the traditional feasts.

The most important event in Nuoro is the festival of the Sagra del Redentore, which takes place during the last week of August both in Nuoro and on Mount Ortobene (where the imposing statue of Cristo Redentore is to be found). For more than a century the Sagra del Redentore has attracted thousands of participants and spectators. Religious celebrations are conducted by big parades of people, dressed in traditional costumes, walking the streets in the centre of the town. Other groups of people, in the evening, play instruments and sing at the amphitheatre and in the squares of the town.
Sant’Antonio’s feast is particularly popular, with people lighting huge bonfires and where its possible to taste the local specialities on offer. The event that takes place at the San Francesco Sanctuary, near Lula, also deserves to be mentioned. Twice a year, thousands of pilgrims leave from the Solitudine church in Nuoro and begin a journey on foot through the night until they arrive at the Sanctuary. Nuoro is the capital of folklore in Sardinia and there are a lot of traditional song and dance groups as well as modern music, theatrical shows and sports.
