Numerous exhibitions of prehistoric bronze and stone artefacts take place in several museums in Sardinia. Nuoro has the Speleoarcheologico Museum (open all year) where it is possible to see a collection of rare ancient works. Sardinia is also known as Isola dei Nuraghi (Nuraghi’s island) because Nuraghi can be seen everywhere. The history of Nuraghi began 5000 years ago. Nuoro was originally a nuragic village and many nuragic areas and buildings still exist today.

Many nuragic places close to today’s sanctuaries give these areas a sacred atmosphere. The people of Sardinia used to consider water sacred, for this reason many sacred wells were built, some of which are still to be found partly intact.
For the more adventurous traveller it is possible to visit the old ruins of the Punic and the Phoenicia ancient ruins of Tharros and Nora. These ancient ruins provide evidence of the Sardinian’s settlers who came by boat across the sea.

The Domus de Janas (Houses of fairies) of Borbore and Balubirde can all be easily reached on foot. Other excursions can be done by car, 4X4, quad bikes, mountain bikes or by trekking. The village of Tiscali, the sacred spring of Su Tempiesu and Su Romanzesu are all worth visiting.
Dolmens and Menhirs are also majestic monuments of the ancient Sardinian civilization. Together with the Domus de Janas , they are easy to find in the municipal area of Nuoro.
